Myopia in children

What is Myopia?

Myopia (nearsightedness) occurs when the eye is longer than normal or has a cornea that is too steep. As a result, light rays focus in front of the retina instead of on it. A myopic child will see near objects clearly, but distant objects will appear blurred.

Uncorrected myopia (nearsightedness) in children may have a negative impact on their development and increase refractive error progression over time. Myopia can be corrected with glasses which will help them to see well at school.

Myopia can be hereditary and nearsighted parents may pass on myopia to their child. An Optician will be able to recommend a prescription for glasses to correct Myopia.

How to spot myopia in children ?

These are all indications that your child may be myopic:

• Your child tends to squint to see the board at school.
• Your child holds his face close to the paper when writing or drawing.
• Your child may complain of frequent headaches or appear tired.
• Your child has trouble catching a ball that you throw at him.

It’s a good idea to ask teachers and carers if they have noticed any of these habits. Don’t hesitate to book your child for an eye test if you have any suspicion that your child may be myopic.
