Hyperopia in children

What is Hyperopia?

Hyperopia (farsightedness) is a very common vision defect in young children, it occurs when the eye is shorter than normal. As a result, light rays focus behind the retina instead of on it. A hyperopic child will see far objects clearly, but near objects will appear blurred.

Children have a natural ability to accommodate for farsightedness in order to see clearly and there will not always be obvious signs of farsightedness. In more significant cases children may complain of headaches and visual fatigue.

In mild cases it’s not always necessary for the child to wear glasses and the Optician will advise on the best solution for your child depending on their prescription. Farsightedness can be corrected with convex lenses (lenses that are thicker in the centre than at the edges). Children’s eyewear is available in light, comfortable frames to suit all ages.

How to spot Hyperopia in children ?

These are all indications that your child may be myopic :
  • Squinting of the eyes
  • Eye pain, visual fatigue
  • Watering eyes
  • Regular headaches
  • Blurred vision from near and from afar too if hyperopia is strong

It is important for children to have regular eye tests. Don’t hesitate to book your child for an eye test if you have a family history of hyperopia or if you have any suspicion that your child may be hyperopic. It’s best to address hyperopia as soon as possible in children.
