Top 5 Ways To Protect Your Eyesight

It’s often thought that our eyesight naturally gets worse as we age, but there are ways in which you can protect your eyesight as time goes on. Here, we count down just five ways in which this can be achieved.

Regular eye tests

The first is making sure you have an eye test on a regular basis, at least every two years with a registered optometrist, as they will be able to detect any problems as early as possible. This will ensure you receive prompt intervention, reducing the risk of further deterioration.

Remember that an eye test is also a health check and can pick up a number of other issues.

UV sunglasses

It is also important to wear sunglasses that provide 100 per cent UVB and UVA protection. Make sure your sunglasses have the CE mark on the temple.

Sunlight can have a negative impact on eyesight, with UV rays causing muscular degeneration, damaging the cornea, and increasing the risk of cataracts. It could also cause cancers of the eyelid.

Wearing sunglasses shields the eyes from UV rays, preventing potential damage in the future.

Swimming goggles in the pool

Another way to protect eyes is to wear swimming goggles in the pool, as this prevents the chlorine from bothering them and drying them out. It also prevents bacteria in the water from touching the eyes, which could lead to infections. You can also get prescription swimming goggles from most opticians.

Eat lots of nutrients

Like everything, eyesight is affected by a poor diet. Therefore, it is essential to eat lots of nutritious food if you want to reduce your eyesight decline.

These include foods that are high in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats, as these boost the body’s natural resistance to UV rays.

Keep your eyes hydrated

Eyes that feel dry can become irritated and cause your vision to blur. That is why it is important to keep your eyes hydrated at all times.

You could do this by drinking plenty of water, particularly on a hot day, and using eye drops and a face mask. Speak to your optician today about managing dry eyes.
